Our Crap Economy

I talk a lot about games, but today I don't want to. A) Because I am currently bored with the games I'm playing and B) I'm feeling a little nervous and upset about our current economic status. Glenn Beck is one of my favorite talk shows and I wanted to discuss this story I saw.

So just about everything that is essential in our daily lives is going up in price. Everyone is feeling it. Inflation is 10 or 11 percent, prices of gas are shooting through the roof and on top of it so is our food.

The average food inflation for American families is now running at 4.5% per year. But a lot of prices are up may more than that, take eggs for example which are up 30% in ONE YEAR. There is a huge surge in demand from China and India by millions of people moving up into the middle class and wanting to heat/cool their homes and they want to eat better and eat more. More food = more raw materials like grain and rice. So the demand is a lot higher and guess what? The supply is running short. So the prices of these underlying raw materials have just about tripled in the past 3 years. Apparently the food companies have been eating that cost increase...but not for long, soon its going to make its way to us.

On top of this we have the whole biofuel thing thats come at probably the worst time possible. We are shooting ourselves in the foot with this thing. It using a big chunk of the corn supply and for what? Some mythical concept of some new fuel that we will all be using. Where is it? I don't see anyone using it.

Brett Arends said "The emerging bull market in agricultural products is following in the footsteps of oil. A few years ago, many Americans hoped $2 gas was a temporary spike. Now it's the rosy memory of a bygone age." which is very true.

So I guess its time to start stockpiling food before the food riots start. LOL!... but seriously.

EQ Classic

Its been a long time since I played Everquest. Well maybe it hasn't been THAT long, but it feels like it. My account has been deactivated since May of 06' so it has been about 2 years.

My friend let me on this new project these guys are working on. Its called EQC. Everquest Classic. These Everquest veterans have taken it upon themselves to create a truly classic EQ server. It will be a progression server starting at classic everquest and moving through Kunark and then Velious. It will not go any further because much of the fan base believes that is where EQ shined. Once Verant sold it to Sony is where many people believed it went downhill with the Luclin expansion.

These guys are working on the database and tuning things to make sure everything on the server is truly classic. There is no release date for beta thus far but everyone who is involved in this project is really excited about it. A lot of the folks who played originally are getting hyped up for it, me included.

First Post

"Hello World!" heh. That phrase is so classic. It always seems to fit perfectly for a first post. I remember that stupid thing from Computer Science in high school... that class was god awful.

Anyway..I'm looking forward to posting on my own personal blog finally. I have been blogging for almost the past 2 years for Xponex, but never made one for myself. It wont be anything significant, just some posts about my working/gaming life.

First things first, Im an avid gamer. I love gaming in almost every form. I started with the classic NES system when I was a wee boy. I progressed through the consoles thats followed: SNES, Sega, N64, Playstation, XBox, etc... It wasnt until I was about 10 or 11 that I actually got my first PC. Ever since then I have been in love with PC gaming from the Real Time Strategies like Age of Empires and Starcraft to the fast paced FPSs like Counter-Strike. I was addicted from day one on that computer. Hours on end in the MS gaming zone, on forums, and AIM. Soon after I had gotten my computer I got immersed in the famous MMORPG Everquest. Now MMOs are one of my favorite types of games to play. I play World of Warcraft now(yea its an okay game, but nothing will live up to the games I played growing up) and get my fix of CS and CoD4 every now and then.

I stay pretty busy between class, work and gaming. Im currently majoring in Engineering at Miami University of Middletown, soon to be Oxford. Working with Xponex has also been a great opportunity and I'm kinda bummed about the fact that I will be moving to Oxford and wont be able to work in Middletown with the web guys. I still hope I can work remotely but we'll see.
